How Japanese shoe sizes work

A Japanese size is simply the length of the foot in centimeters, in steps of 0.5 cm. A size 25 fits a foot about 25 cm long. This makes it easy to convert, and easy to check against the size chart of any Japanese brand.

The letters after the number, such as E, 2E, 3E or 4E, show the width of the shoe. More E's means wider. If you have wide feet, Japanese shoes in 3E or 4E can fit better than a larger length.

How to measure your foot

  1. Stand on a sheet of paper next to a wall, with your heel against the wall.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe on the paper.
  3. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark, in centimeters.
  4. Do the same for the other foot and use the longer measurement. Measure in the evening, when feet are a little larger.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Japanese 25 the same as a US 8?

For women's shoes, yes: Japan 25 cm is about US 8, UK 5 and EU 38. For men's shoes, Japan 25 cm is about US 7, UK 6 and EU 40.5. Use the right table for the type of shoe.

What if I am between two sizes?

Choose the larger size, especially for shoes with narrow fronts or if you wear thick socks. If the shoe is available in a wider fit (for example 3E), a regular length in a wider fit is often better than a longer size.

Why do different charts give different numbers?

US, UK and EU sizes are not defined by one standard, and brands cut their lasts differently. Charts from different shops can differ by half a size. The values here follow the size chart of a major Japanese marketplace and match the usual rule of thumb: for women, US size is the Japanese size minus 17; for men, minus 18.

Are kids' sizes included?

Not yet. Children's sizes vary a lot between brands and between the US toddler and youth scales, so a single table would be misleading.
